Last Week - Highs and Lows
Things did not pan out particularly well at Cheltenham for my ex-jumpers at Mick Channons. Loch Ba missed the start and then unseated Dominic Elsworth mid race. Somersby flew over the first 2 fences in the Champion Chase only to put in a short one at the 4th fence and fire Dom over his head. Dominic then brought the horse down as he stumbled over the prostrate jockey! Poor Dom – he is very sore and has cracked his breast bone – oh how painful! Sgt Reckless was a huge disappointment and folded very quickly. A bit of a mystery as he seems fine. Only time will tell. Personally I think he wants better ground and a flatter course. He will hopefully go to Aintree if it ever stops raining!
A super Point to Point result last week – Alex Embiricos won the Open Maiden at Marks Tey, East Essex on Red Burn. (See Horse and Hound page 43). The horse was bred by her mother and father who used to own Aldaniti. Red Burn spent 2 months here in the Autumn to “get his jumping together” and now he is flying! Well done Alex!! Everybody was delighted.
Calgary Bay again ran disappointingly at Cheltenham and is now being roughed off. The plan is to bring him back in the Autumn in Point to Points and Hunter Chase him next Spring. Things have not gone right for him this year and I think he now needs a good holiday and some nice days in the field when the sun shines again and the grass grows!
Very busy here with the All Weather gallop. Lots of event riders and Point to Point trainers using it. It is riding really well and is out for hire at £10 a horse for anybody wanting to use it.
More news soon. Weather forecast dreadful!
