We’re keeping busy at West Lockinge Farm but the weather has been extremely difficult for the past 2 weeks culminating in frost and fog on Monday and Tuesday with more to follow. The gallop however is perfect.
Calgary Bay went to Aintree on Saturday but simply cannot gallop on soft ground. He made several uncharacteristic jumping errors due to being over cautious but at least he finished the race (4th). He will be aimed at the 2m 5f handicap at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day – the race he won last year.
Mick Channon’s hurdlers have been running with credit. The gorgeous Fork Handles was 3rd in her first ever hurdle race at Fakenham on Monday. She jumped brilliantly and should definitely win races over hurdles. Inffiraaj was 4th at Sandown on Friday – a very promising first effort. Another ex West Lockinge Farm inmate, Captain Cardington was the winner! The enigmatic Spanish Fork was 4th on Tuesday at Fontwell over 2m 2f. He needs further but is obviously suited to a sharp track as the rest of the field don’t get away from him and leave him disappointed.
Balbriggan and Loch Ba are due to run around Christmas time and Somersby is shaping well in his home work here at Lockinge. His annoying ‘splint’ is settling down at last. He is being aimed at the Victor Chandler Chase in January at Ascot – the race he won last year – but it will be tough going against the likes of Sprinter Sacre. It is most irritating to see that there is a horse running of a very similar name called Somerby. How can Weatherbys allow 2 such similar names? Watch this space for more news.
